I’m Vanessa — a biologist with a PhD in Science/Biology and a long-standing commitment to sharing science in ways that are clear, thoughtful, and accessible.
My academic and professional experience is outlined in the Résumé section. Here, I share the personal context that informs my work as an educator, mentor, and academic administrator. I am Brazilian and moved to Canada ten years ago to pursue my PhD. What began as a doctoral program evolved into a lasting professional and personal home, shaped by meaningful teaching experiences and sustained engagement within a research-intensive academic environment.
I am often described as friendly, kind, and approachable. Qualities I value and intentionally bring into my teaching, mentoring, and administrative roles. These traits support the learning environments I aim to create: structured, supportive, and intellectually rigorous, while remaining humane and inclusive.
My interest in biology began early. As a child, I spent time exploring specimens under a simple microscope my father owned. One that relied on sunlight rather than electricity. Watching water droplets and flower petals reveal hidden structures sparked a lasting fascination with the unseen mechanisms that shape living systems. That early sense of curiosity continues to inform both my teaching and my approach to scientific inquiry.
Over the course of my academic career, I have engaged with a broad range of biological disciplines. Through years of teaching and supervision, I became increasingly aware that science is not always presented in ways that feel accessible or meaningful to all learners. This insight has strongly influenced my pedagogical approach. I see the translation of complex scientific ideas into clear, engaging frameworks as a core responsibility of teaching-focused academics.
This perspective is also what led me to writing and, eventually, to creating this website: a space to share scientific ideas, reflections on teaching and learning, and insights drawn from both classroom experience and academic administration.
My recent writing has focused primarily on environmental science and human genetics, though my interests extend across fields including botany, marine biology, and microbiology. Examples of my work can be found in the Portfolio section, and I welcome thoughtful engagement and feedback.
What I’m Working On Now
Currently, my work centers on undergraduate teaching in molecular and microbial genetics, curriculum and assessment design, and graduate program administration within the health sciences. I am particularly interested in developing assessments that emphasize conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning, as well as in creating learning environments that support diverse student pathways. Alongside this, I continue to write and reflect on how scientific knowledge can be communicated more clearly. Both within academic contexts and beyond them.
Thank you for visiting. I’m glad you’re here.
Warm regards,
Vanessa Poletto Borges
